Pedestrian Safety Tips
Pedestrian safety continues to be a major priority for the Division of Public Safety and the campus community.
Please keep in mind the follwoing pedestrian safety tips:
- Be alert! Your safety and the safety of others depends on your attentiveness to your surroundings.
- DO NOT dart suddenly into traffic. Give vehicles a reasonable time to respond. You must allow sufficient reaction time for oncoming traffic to yield.
- Utilize crosswalks at all times and obey the signals at intersections when walking. Under Illinois law, as a pedestrian, you DO NOT have the right of way until you establish yourself in the crosswalk. If you are crossing at any location other than a crosswalk, you MUST yield to vehicular traffic.
- Try to make eye contact; this helps you to determine if the driver has seen you.
- When driving, keep alert to pedestrians and bicyclists to avoid a possible accident.
